Sharan Burrow

Sharmeen Contractor

Todd Cort

Nikolaj Halkjaer Pedersen

High levels of economic inequality – both within and between countries – have been tied to aggregate contraction of demand, lower levels of economic growth, political volatility, and financial instability and therefore pose material systemic risks for investors. This has clear knock-on effects on the ability to achieve environmental and social goals.

In this session, we will explore what the research says on economic inequality, its drivers, and potential short, medium and long-term impacts on society and the economy. We will consider important topics for companies to tackle inequality, and lastly, we will discuss how institutional investors and policymakers can respond in different market contexts.

Sharan Burrow, Co-Chair, The Taskforce on Inequality and Social-related Financial Disclosures (TISFD)(remote speaker)
Sharmeen Contractor, Lead, Investor Engagement and Advocacy, Oxfam America
Todd Cort, Senior Lecturer in Sustainability; Faculty Director of Sustainability Program, MBA for Executives; Faculty Co-Director, Yale Center for Business and the Environment

11:45 - 13:00

Arisa Kishigami

Benjamin Michel

Tollak Nylaende Bowitz

Iraz Soyalp

Current socioeconomic systems have led to widespread nature degradation and pervasive human rights impacts. There is an urgent need to transition to a more sustainable economy which benefits both environmental and social systems. However, if not well-designed and implemented, investments and public policies for nature can negatively impact human rights and socio-economic conditions, and vice-versa. Such dynamics highlight the need to investigate the relationship between social and nature issues. This session will discuss how public policy and investor action can help amplify synergies and address trade-offs between these areas, including in the specific case of land use and deforestation.

Financial value creation and sustainability are not at odds with each other.

Within financial markets, private markets are uniquely positioned to create value for investors, portfolio companies and society by helping portfolio companies embed sustainability strategies that drive improved financial performance.

Private markets has long prided itself on its ability to use the tools of stewardship and capital allocation more effectively to bring strategic insights and operational excellence to portfolio companies. Unfortunately, many private market investors do not yet know how to identify, create, and capture that value.

Even those few private market investors who do it, are at the beginning of their sustainability value creation journey and can still progress.

Join us to understand and discuss the process and best practices with investors using sustainability to drive value creation in private markets.

The carbon budget to limit warming to 1.5C is rapidly being exhausted on the current emissions trajectory. Carbon pricing shows serious promise as a tool to address this crisis. To date, results for market-based pricing have been patchy and challenges persist. New tools, such as the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) and the concept of Climate Clubs, aim to remedy that.

How do the latest developments on regional carbon pricing affect investor transition risk? How are climate alliances between nations teeing up the embedding of carbon into global trade? How might these developments impact the spread of carbon pricing globally? How can investors get on the front foot?

Plenary | Debate: Where should net zero investors be putting their focus to keep 1.5 alive?

16:45 - 17:30

Investors recognise that limiting temperature increases to as close to 1.5°C as possible is critical to minimise system-level risks to portfolios. Yet questions remain on how investor action, and particularly stewardship, can most effectively contribute to this aim. Is the growing investor focus on real economy policy and sovereign engagement a more effective tool than corporate engagement?

This session will tackle this question head on, in a debate format, with expert speakers discussing whether investors should be prioritising engagement with policymakers, or alternatively, whether corporate engagement should remain the focus.
